Sierra Leone Partnership

Posted: February 5, 2011

We at Stretford High School have established a link with Benguema Army Rec School in Freetown Sierra Leone.  The project is part of the British Council Connecting Classrooms.

The partnership is well under way after a week long visit conducted in June 2010.  Four members of staff went out to Freetown and their findings are summarised in a short video documentary:

.

So far the project has seen:

  • CPD Training – all our CPD training resources are being used for teachers in Freetown;
  • Planning – working with the Benguema family of schools to help them create school development plans;
  • Church link – our local church has made and donated items for the church in Freetown to help build the community. We are also helping create a sunday school;
  • Video – the video is being used to help create awareness;
  • A Xmas shoebox project;
  • Finally, we are running “Recycle for Sierra Leone”. This is where resources not used anymore by staff at Stretford are transported to Benguema for use in their school.

We have also held a massively successful Sierra Leone Chrismas Shoebox appeal which has recently seen 150 Christmas boxes sent out to Freetown!
