 Curriculum

The PE Curriculum at SHS is strategically developed and constantly evolves to meet the demands and focus on the strengths of students in each cohort.

At Yr 7 and 8, students experience a wide base of 12 activties over the academic year. The aim is to identify key strengths, and introduce new activities. All students also undergo a programme of Health Related Fitness. The aim of this is to meet the aims of the Healthy Schools standard, the Be Healthy Strand of Every Child Matters and also to underpin study preparation for those students who choose to go onto examination PE studies.

At Yr 9 students begin specialising and choose a route of study. For those who prefer game activities there is a “Games” route where invasion games are the focus. Some students prefer more individual activities so opt for the “Aesthetic Route.” Some students enjoy the variety therefore the third route is a “Mixed” route. Again, students embark on a course of Health Related Fitness.

In Key Stage 3 we also deliver Bronze and Silver Leadership Awards and recruit members to the school council to represent sport.

At Key Stage 4 we offer a variety of courses to provide opportunity for all students regardless of ability, strengths and learning styles. Students also have opportunity for representing sport on the student council, Gold Leadership Award and Leadership Academy. Leaders at KS4 are also crucial to our successful SSCo programme which SHS is committed to through the period of change.

We offer:

  • GCSE Full Course PE (Edexcel)
  • GCSE Short Course PE (Exdexcel)
  • GCSE Part time route PE – for students fully committed to outside of school sport
  • OCR National Sport
  • BTEC Sport
  • BTEC Dance

All students complete a 2 hour-a-week programme of Core PE at KS4.

Partnerships are key to the PE curriculum, and we enjoy partnerships with many providers including, Manchester United Foundation, Salford City Reds, Lancashire County Cricket Club, Sport Trafford, Stretford Leisure Centre, and we use local opportunities for Golf, Water Sports, Skating etc…..

Cross curricular links are very important in PE.

  • We promote use of foreign languages and culture via our International Sport Unit and display of key terms in 4 languages.
  • English and Maths are supported via the use of numeric equations, scoring and the use of correct terms, phrases and descriptive writing in the student progress files.
  • Science is closely linked to the Health Related Fitness Unit and Examination PE.
  • Whole school behaviour for learning is supported by PE with a strict policy of extra curricular non selection for students not meeting the high expectations of SHS behaviour policy.
  • Extra curricular is widely underpinned by non PE staff with individual expertise and interest in specific sporting areas.
  • Finally ICT is fundamental in our delivery. We have and regularly use flip cameras and editing software, all staff have a PC tablet to use to demonstrate excellent practice in lessons. The department has an e-magazine and plasma screen to promote extra curricular and e-link AfL stategies to support learning.
