ENGLISH BACCALAUREATE (EBacc):
During Key Stage Four, the Humanities department is offering the internationally recognised and prestigious EBacc. It is a new certificate that will be awarded to any student who secures good GCSE or accredited certificate passes in English, Mathematics, the Sciences, a modern or ancient foreign language and a Humanity – such as History or Geography. The Government intends the EBacc to become one of the main measures of achievement for schools in the future.
GCSE RELIGIOUS STUDIES:
All students take the Religious Studies GCSE Short Course, ‘Religion and Life’ and have the opportunity for early entry at the end of year 10. Many students will want to add an additional GCSE Religious Education course, ‘Religion and Society’, so that they leave school with a full GCSE. The Religious Studies GCSE courses offer a unique opportunity for students to explore issues such as abortion, euthanasia, war, bullying, organ transplantation, genetic modification and many other thought provoking topics.
Others will have the opportunity to re-sit the short course. Some students will follow a non-exam PSHE course, giving opportunity to focus on Core GCSEs needed for entry into further education. Pupils can also opt for Personal Development lessons which focus entirely on life skills and the development of transferable skills which can be applied in a work place setting.
GCSE HISTORY:
The Humanities department caters for the needs and requirements of all students regardless of their abilities. GCSE Ancient History is a new academically challenging much sought after GCSE course for the most able pupils. Pupils enjoy a journey of discovery through Ancient Greece; they follow in the footsteps of Alexander the Great and marvel at the magnificence of Sparta.
GCSE Modern World History is another popular choice with the Stretford High pupils. Pupils develop an in-depth understanding of the causes of World War One, World War Two and the role of the Weimar government in Germany. Stretford High historians have an opportunity to carry out independent research regarding the Vietnam War and present their findings in the form of the controlled assessment.
GCSE SOCIOLOGY:
GCSE Sociology has been a huge success with very high approval ratings offered by Stretford High sociologists. The course is directly linked to the development of high order thinking and listening skills. Topic included sociology of youth, crime and deviation, investigating society and research methods.
GCSE GEOGRAPHY:
GCSE Geography is a new and exciting addition to the Humanities arsenal of GCSEs. The course is a journey through the different amazing landscapes of the world. The course covers both Physical and Human Geography. Students will go an interactive expedition through Antarctica, journey through the Great Barrier Reef and delve into the wonders of the world.
