1 After New Zealand and Japan suffered devastating earthquakes, now its the turn of Spain where a quake in Murcia has caused terrible damage and loss of life. Today’s thoughts are simply with the people of Spain who are suffering at this time.

2 China has been criticised by the USA secretary of State, Hilary Clinton for a “deplorable” human right record. In China, freedom of speech is frowned upon by the communist government, meaning if people’s views differ from the government they are punished as criminals. Is this right? How important is democracy and freedom of speech?

3 This weekend saw the Eurovision Song contest. (At the time of writing we dont know the winner, so maybe add it!) The annual contest of often mocked for truly awful songs. Blue represented the UK this time round. We have a terrible record. Is the contest worthwhile? Pointless or just simple good light hearted fun that brings europe together?

4 Allegations have been made again that FIFA football officials took bribes to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. Surprisingly the 2018 one went to Russia and the 2022 one to the tiny Gulf state, at the expense of favourites, England. Do you trust the World Cup bidding process or do you think it is corrupt?

5 It’s Friday! Time for a light hearted look at our world. Yes Rossy is a Swiss adventurer who has made a one man Jet plane and flown over the Grand Canyon. Look at the footage. If you had the Jet, what would you like to fly over?

International Thought for the Day W/C 9th May 2011

May 9, 2011 in International Thought for the Day by Dan Stucke

1. World News has been dominated by the killing of Osama Bin Laden by US Navy SEALS. Osama Bin Laden was the leader of the terrorist group Al Qaeda – responsible for the 9/11 attacks on the USA. However, will his death cause an angry reaction from terrorists who will want revenge? Should he have been arrested and put on trial? Was killing what he deserved? A deep and controversial start to the thought for the week that is dividing the world.
2. In Japan, Sony has hired detectives to investigate a hacking of its computers when the bank details of over 100 million on line gamers was accessed illegally. Do you feel safe putting personal details online such as bank details? Do you think about internet security enough? What information do you have on facebook for instance that really shouldnt be on there?
3. In Indonesia, an agreement has been signed with the European Union to prevent the sale of illegally cut down wood from trees in the rich forest in Indonesia. It is hoped the agreement will protect the environment which is home to some of the most amazing wildlife on the planet. This is great news, but many of the local people who cut down the trees did so to feed their families and will now be sqeezed out by large companies who hold licenses to cut down the trees. Do you have sympathy for them? Or do your sympathies sit entirely with the envronmental issue? How do we solve this?
4. A light hearted Friday thought today. In Holland, a football club VVV, has signed a toddler on a 10 year contract after he appeared on You Tube kicking three balls into a toy box? Fluke or genuine talent??????

2. Alongside AIDS, malaria is the biggest cause of premature death in Africa. Scientists now believe they may have found a breakthrough with genetically modified wild mosquitos. these “super bugs” should become dominant and kill off infected mosquitos. If you were a scientist, what breakthrough creation would you like to develop?

3. There is an unusual situation in Tibet. Formally its own country, Tibet was taken over by China in the 1950s. But the government still exists outside the country – based in India. the leader was the Dali Lama – but elections held by Tibetans across the world have elected a new Tibetan leader, Lobsan Sangay, even though he is not allowed in the country! What do you think should happen? Should China give up Tibet? Should they keep it? Or maybe even power share with a local government?

4. A humorous one for Friday! Indian bank officials were left embarrased after not cleaning a bank vault! They opened it to find bugs had eaten cash, at the loss of £137 000!!!!! So, when was the last time you cleaned your school bag? What do you think lives in there????
