AS COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE:
Communication and Culture is a brand new, fascinating subject that will get you to step outside the classroom and mix what you learn with people, with media, with music and with everyday experiences that affect each and every one of us. At AS level identity and self-presentation is studied and the impact culture makes on our sense of self is explored.
Topics are:
- Identity and Self Presentation
- Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication
- Sub-Cultures and Group Communication
- Cultural Studies
- Semiotics
AS GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS:
By studying Politics you will be able to examine many interesting questions:
• Who has political power and why?
• Why do people vote as they do?
• How are political decisions made?
For the Greek philosopher Aristotle, politics was the ‘master science’: that is, nothing less than the activity through which people try to improve their lives and create the ‘good society’.
The subject is not only about current political affairs, but it will help you to take a balanced view of important issues and learn how to evaluate information.
AS GEOLOGY:
Geology is the branch of science concerned with the structure, evolution and dynamics of the Earth and with the exploitation of the mineral and energy resources that it contains. Geology demonstrates the relevance of science to society, not least, in the hazards it predicts, its insight into the evolution of life and its collaboration in engineering projects.
Foundation Geology is organised into:
- Matter — the global structure of the Earth and the composition of the crust.
- Energy — the Earth’s energy sources and processes, which produce minerals, igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and the movement of the plates.
- Time and Change — the geological record of rocks and fossils and the dating of geological events.
